In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed... No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people. Preface to 1828 Dictionary

APOD'OSIS, n. [Gr.] The application or latter part of a similitude.
The consequent clause or conclusion in a conditional sentence,
expressing the result, and thus distinguished from the
protasis or clause which expresses a condition. Thus, in the
sentence, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him," the former clause
is the protasis, and the latter the apodosis.
* Some grammarians extend the terms protasis and apodosis to the introductory clause and the concluding clause, even when the sentence is not conditional. | ||||||||
