In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed... CONSUBSTANTIATION, n. The union of the body of our blessed Savior with the sacramental elements. The Lutherans maintain that after consecration of the elements, the body and blood of Christ are substantially present with the substance of the bread and wine, which is called consubstantiation or impanation.
An identity or union of
substance.
The actual,
substantial presence of the body of Christ with the bread and
wine of the sacrament of the Lord's Supper; impanation; --
opposed to transubstantiation.
* This view, held by Luther himself, was called consubstantiation by non Lutheran writers in contradistinction to transsubstantiation, the Catholic view. | ||||||||
