EL'EMI, n. The gum elemi, so called; but said to be a resinous substance, the produce of the Amyris elemifera, a small tree or shrub of South America. It is of a whitish color tinged with green or yellow.
A fragrant gum resin obtained chiefly from
tropical trees of the genera Amyris and Canarium. A.
elemifera yields Mexican elemi; C. commune, the Manila
elemi. It is used in the manufacture of varnishes, also in ointments
and plasters.
