In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed... No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people. Preface to 1828 Dictionary

NICKEL, n. A metal of a white or reddish white color, of great hardness, very difficult to be purified, always magnetic, and when perfectly pure, malleable. It is generally obtained from its sulphuret.
A bright silver-white metallic element. It is of
the iron group, and is hard, malleable, and ductile. It occurs
combined with sulphur in millerite, with arsenic in the mineral
niccolite, and with arsenic and sulphur in nickel glance. Symbol Ni.
Atomic weight 58.6.
* On account of its permanence in air and inertness to oxidation, it is used in the smaller coins, for plating iron, brass, etc., for chemical apparatus, and in certain alloys, as german silver. It is magnetic, and is very frequently accompanied by cobalt, both being found in meteoric iron. A small coin made of or containing nickel;
esp., a five-cent piece.
[Colloq. U.S.]
