OR'DINATE, v.t. To appoint. [Not used.]

OR'DINATE, a. [L. ordinatus.] Regular; methodical. An ordinate figure is one whose sides and angles are equal.

OR'DINATE, n. In geometry and conic sections, a line drawn from any point of the circumference of an ellipsis or other conic section, perpendicularly across the axis to the other side.

An ordinate is a line drawn perpendicular to the axis of a curve and terminating the curvilinear space.

Ordinates of a curve, right lines parallel to one another, terminated by the curve, and bisected by a right line called the diameter.

  1. Well-ordered; orderly; regular; methodical.

    Ordinate figure (Math.), a figure whose sides and angles are equal; a regular figure.

  2. The distance of any point in a curve or a straight line, measured on a line called the axis of ordinates or on a line parallel to it, from another line called the axis of abscissas, on which the corresponding abscissa of the point is measured.

    * The ordinate and abscissa, taken together, are called coördinates, and define the position of the point with reference to the two axes named, the intersection of which is called the origin of coördinates. See Coordinate.
