SKID, n.

1. A curving timber to preserve a ship's side from injury by heavy bodies hoisted or lowered against it; a slider.

2. A chain used for fastening the wheel of a wagon, to prevent its turning when descending a steep hill.

  1. A shoe or clog, as of iron, attached to a chain, and placed under the wheel of a wagon to prevent its turning when descending a steep hill; a drag; a skidpan; also, by extension, a hook attached to a chain, and used for the same purpose.
  2. A piece of timber used as a support, or to receive pressure.
    Specifically: (a) pl. (Naut.)
  3. To protect or support with a skid or skids] also, to cause to move on skids.
  4. To check with a skid, as wagon wheels.
    Dickens.
  5. A runner (one or two) under some flying machines, used for landing.
  6. Act of skidding; -- called also side slip.
  7. To slide without rotating; -- said of a wheel held from turning while the vehicle moves onward.
  8. To fail to grip the roadway; specif., to slip sideways on the road; to side-slip; -- said esp. of a cycle or automobile.
  9. To haul (logs) to a skid and load on a skidway.

It is not only important, but, in a degree necessary, that the people of this country, should have an American Dictionary of the English language; for, although the body of the language is the same as in England, and it is desirable to perpetuate that sameness, yet some differences must exist. Language is the expression of ideas; and if the people of one country cannot preserve an identity of ideas, they cannot retain an identity of language.
