STRAND, n.

1. The shore or beach of the sea or ocean, or of a large lake, and perhaps of a navigable river. It is never used of the bank of a small river or pond. The Dutch on the Hudson apply it to a landing place; as the strand at Kingston.

2. One of the twists or parts of which a rope is composed.

2. To break one of the strands of a rope.

[Probably fr. D. streen a skein; akin to G. strähne a skein, lock of hair, strand of a rope.]
  1. One of the twists, or strings, as of fibers, wires, etc., of which a rope is composed.
  2. To break a strand of (a rope).
  3. The shore, especially the beach of a sea, ocean, or large lake; rarely, the margin of a navigable river.
