1828 Definition

WICK, n. A number of threads of cotton or some similar substance, loosely twisted into a string, round which wax or tallow is applied by means of melting and running in a mold, and thus forming a candle or torch.

1913 Definition
Wick (wick)
n.(?)
Wick
  1. A street; a village; a castle; a dwelling; a place of work, or exercise of authority; -- now obsolete except in composition; as, bailiwick, Warwick, Greenwick.
    Stow.
  2. A narrow port or passage in the rink or course, flanked by the stones of previous players.
  3. A bundle of fibers, or a loosely twisted or braided cord, tape, or tube, usually made of soft spun cotton threads, which by capillary attraction draws up a steady supply of the oil in lamps, the melted tallow or wax in candles, or other material used for illumination, in small successive portions, to be burned.

But true it is, that when the oil is spent
The light goes out, and wick is thrown away.
    Spenser.

  4. To strike a stone in an oblique direction.
    Jamieson.

Noah Says...
In correcting public evils, great reliance is placed on schools. But learning and sciences have no material effect in subduing ambition and selfishness, reconciling parties or subjecting private interest to the influence of a ruling preference of public good.
 On Suffrage (unpublished)
